BRES Goals
To explore the intersection of environmental injustice, racial disparities, and public health through an examination of PFAS contamination in drinking water and its impact on communities of color. This study will address environmental, social, and health implications of PFAS exposure, with a specific emphasis on promoting equity and advocating for policy changes to rectify systemic inequalities.
BRES Student Learning Objectives
In order to meet the research goal, the students from the CSI and Guttman will:
- Assess the extent of PFAS contamination in drinking water sources within communities of color.
- Examine the socio-economic and environmental factors contributing to disparities in PFAS exposure among different racial and ethnic groups.
- Investigate the health outcomes, including mental health impacts, associated with long-term PFAS exposure in communities of color.
4. Develop evidence-based recommendations for policy interventions and community empowerment initiatives aimed at addressing environmental racism and promoting social justice in water quality management.
BRES Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the joint project, students will be able to:
- Determine disparities in PFAS exposure and health outcomes among communities of color compared to predominantly white communities.
- Gain insights into the socio-economic and environmental factors driving environmental injustice and racial disparities in water quality management.
- Address recommendations for targeted interventions, public health initiatives, and policy reforms to address PFAS contamination and promote equity in environmental protection.
- Empower communities of color through participatory research, capacity-building, and advocacy for social and environmental justice.
