2 | Team Meeting with CSI on Zoom 1:30-2:00 PM: Introduce concepts of environmental justice, including discussions on how marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by environmental hazards by reviewing the Flint water crisis. |
3 | Read 2-3 articles on PFAS exposure. Intersection of PFAS Contamination, Race, and Social Justice. |
4-5 | Discuss historical and current examples of environmental racism. Analyze case studies and research findings that highlight disparities in exposure, health impacts, and access to resources among different racial and ethnic groups. Introduce students about qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and narrative analysis. Submit your findings on research questions #1-3. What are the levels of PFAS contamination in drinking water sources located in communities of color compared to predominantly white communities? How do socio-economic factors, such as income levels and access to healthcare, influence the vulnerability of communities of color to PFAS exposure? What policy recommendations and community-based interventions can be implemented to address PFAS contamination and promote environmental justice in marginalized communities? Share your work and review two posts and comment on it |
6-8 | Community-based Experiential Learning Project: Engage students in community-based learning activities, such as conducting interviews with community members or collaborating with local organizations working on environmental justice issues. Introduce students to policy analysis techniques and frameworks for evaluating environmental policies. Encourage students to develop policy recommendations based on their research findings and advocate for positive change at the local or national level. Submit your findings on research questions #4-6. Post your findings and review other posts. What are the perceptions and experiences of communities of color regarding PFAS contamination, access to clean drinking water, and environmental justice? What are the barriers faced by marginalized communities in accessing information, resources, and support related to PFAS contamination and mental health concerns? Investigate the health outcomes, including mental health impacts, associated with long-term PFAS exposure in communities of color. |
9-10 | Group Presentation; Team meeting/writing up an individual paper including the six research questions and policy recommendations, and your reflectionon learning experiences, personal perspectives, and potential actions for promoting environmental and social justice in their communities. |
